2010-2011 Program Year Statistics and Quotes

We appreciate the continued hard work of our school site coordinators, principals, teachers, and parents to make our second program year another success!  The information below clearly shows that the program continues to be embraced.  We are also very proud of the students for choosing to read as a form of entertainment.  Not only the statistics, but also the quotes, show they are reading more and developing a connection to literature, critical steps in improving literacy skills and becoming lifelong readers!

During the 2010-2011 school year, the students in the MVOB Program:
  • Read for more than 5.5 million minutes outside of school hours.
  • Earned 7,413 new books for doing so.

Students not only participated, but throughout the year they read more.  We saw an increase in the number of students who received Gold certificates.
  • For all five schools combined, overall average increase in the number of students participating who received Gold went from 40% to as high as 57%.
  • By the end of the year, most schools had 60-65% of their participating students receiving Gold certificates.
  • One of our new schools increased their Gold certificate recipients by 25% - from 40% at the beginning of the year to 65% by the end of the year!

On the end-of-the-year teacher surveys:
  • 98.6% of teachers felt the program helped encourage their students to do more reading outside of regular school hours.
  • 92.9% of the teachers felt the program contributed to an increase of literacy skills for the students who participated.
  • 97.1% of the teachers felt the program helped their students form a closer connection to literature.

On the end-of-the-year teacher surveys, when asked what they like best about the MVOB program, teacher responses include:
I love the fact that our kids get an opportunity to own a brand new book through this program. For many of these students the possibility of going to a book store to browse and pick up a book is non-existent.
Children build home libraries.
The students are motivated to read.
It encourages parental involvement in helping their children with reading at home.
The passion it inspired in my students for reading.
The kids get so excited about getting to choose a free (nice, new!) book! It is a special thing to them!
A first grader that just moved to this country was so proud of his diploma that he had his mom frame it and hang it on the wall. Not only was it the only thing they had on the wall in their bare apartment but it was the first time he had won anything.

On the end-of-the-year student surveys, when asked what they liked about having the MVOB program at their school, student responses include (verbatim, as the students typed them into the computer):
Reading all the new books.
It was fun and I got to learn how to enjoy books.
Because I got more books to read.
People were proud of you.
i like having it at school because you get awards and a picture taken and you can show it to your family.
I THINK IT IS FUN
you get free books
I loved all the awards, it made me feel good
For reading you get books and then, read those and you get more book.
It helped me read more clear and more fluent and I learned some new words
It lets me read and be more smart every time I read and practice
That every one could particapate In this activity and you could get free books.
Because I can see how smart I am.

During the 2009-2010 school year, the students in the MVOB Program:
• Read for more than 2.4 million minutes outside of school hours.
• Earned 3,149 new books for doing so.

Students not only participated, but throughout the year they read more. We saw an increase in the number of students who received Gold certificates.
• For all three schools combined, overall increase from 40% to as high as 55% receiving Gold at the end of the year.
• One school went from 42% to 64%!

end-of-the-year teacher surveys, 95% of teachers at the 3 schools we served said they feel the program:
• Contributed to their students reading more outside of regular school hours.
• Contributed to increasing the literacy skills of the students in their classes.
